On October 15, 2009, the General Assembly held elections for 5 of the 10 Non-Permanent Seats at the UN Security Council. The five new members took up their seats on the 1st of January, 2010 for a two year term. Prior to its election, Nigeria was endorsed by the African Union (AU) and by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in June 2009.
In the past, Nigeria had served three terms on the UN Security Council between 1966-1967, 1978-1979 and 1994-1995.
